Nova Twins – Who Are The Girls? | Album Review

The ever-expanding rock genre has been continuing to shift and broaden thanks to many rising bands who are unafraid to take a risk or do things outside the usual mould. London two-piece and best friends Nova Twins are one of the latest breakthrough acts to find themselves in a genre of their own. Constructed in a sonic world found in amongst rock, grime, DIY, punk and everything in between, Nova Twins continue to spread the word of their individual style in the form of debut LP Who Are The Girls? Made up of 10 volcanic tracks of genre-shifting energy and remarkable boldness, Who Are The Girls? is bound to turn a few heads. It’s one of their first big releases since joining 333 Wreckords, the artist collective from Jason Butler (Fever 333). ‘Vortex’ doesn’t skip a beat and pushes straight into a bass-loaded course of action, with vocals fast to accompany. That booming bass quickly becomes a steady constant throughout the work from Nova Twins, rightly asserting itself in every track. Quickly following suit is ‘Play Fair’, which maintains the high energy already established. The track soon kicks into an explosive chorus, with altering vocal patterns seamlessly combining to make an addictive result. Hypnotic atmosphere is built from an other-worldly employment of heavy beats, vibrating bass and creative use of pedals, all coming together to form a diverse, stand- out track. Latest single ‘Taxi’ turns up the heat with resounding vocals and pulsing cow bell, filling your ears with a sound you won’t want to get out of your head. There’s a raw energy to their composition, which deserves to be turned up loud. This debut has been a couple of years in the making, with 2018 release ‘Lose Your Head’ making an appearance in the track listing. Already familiar with their growing audience, the track is another bold statement that builds into an explosion of sound. The tempo takes a rest in ‘Ivory Tower’; an eerie track that adds an element of spook to the overall final product. The deep vocals are threaded with higher pitches, showing off the boundless vocal range that fits seamlessly into the Nova Twins’ current musical treasury. The penultimate contribution lays in the form of ‘Undertaker’. Initially taking on a steady journey to then assemble into something much more, it doesn’t halt the relentlessness we’ve already been presented with. Don’t expect the expected with this fiery duo, they have been supplying an abundance of extraordinary since their formation and this compendium is no exception. Who Are The Girls? is an accomplished first full-length offering from the latest trailblazers in the expansive rock environment. Jammed with exciting choruses and daring instrumental harmonisations, this is a relentless rollercoaster you won’t want to end. Score: 9/10 Who Are The Girls? is released February 28th via 333 Wreckords. You can purchase the record here. Nova Twins will be touring this extensively this spring before embarking on the festival circuit, dates below.
