Dedicated to the art of disruption, providing a pensive space for personal appraisal, global awareness and the pursuit of self-empowerment; the big smoke Alt-Rock regenerators Nova Twins, overwhelm the senses with what feels like the audible equivalent of a neutron-star collision, with their fittingly named second album Supernova.
Following on from the success of their debut LP Who Are The Girls?, released just a month prior to the beginning of lockdowns in the UK; the genre-shattering duo Nova Twins sought comfort in superseding the dispiriting experience of quarantine, with the inception of what would come to be their finest release to date.
Journeying through the vast realms of Supernova’s explosive fusion of multi-genre mayhem, it became abundantly clear that their expertise will forever lie in the formation of ever-enthralling hype anthems, such as the rambunctious wall of sound off of their lead single ‘Antagonist’ and the perfect addition to a reimagined Dead Or Alive fight scene soundtrack with ‘Choose Your Fighter’.
Although the album is rife with expert sensory overloads just waiting patiently for your eventual adoration; we find that besides the overwhelming brilliance of the two singles we’ve previously mentioned, you would be missing out if you accidentally hit skip on some extra curious creations that we can’t get enough of.
Conjuring some very alluring images of the NuMetal fetish club night from The Matrix Revolutions; ‘Puzzles’ invites listeners to awaken the essence of carnal desires, with a dominating storyline focused on the importance and excitement surrounding immense eroticism.
Although previous tracks have seemingly centred around very honest statements on human desire; the most intriguing and attention grabbing single rising above them all comes from a tongue-in-cheek take on lethal thirst with their second single release in the albums cycle.
‘K.M.B.’ stands alone as a semi-risqué Heavy hitting blaster, allowing us to live vicariously through their savage attempt at ridding the world of an assumed degenerate. The singles diversified mixture of Rap, NuMetal & a sprinkling of R&B stylings detailing the throes of murderous euphoria, is by no means the usual formula for a certified slay-tastic masterpiece; yet NT continue to triumph in the face of apparent disbelief and doubtfulness.
Nova Twins’ eagerness to shake up the seemingly stifled current concoctions of an almost completely white-washed and predictable scene, is a feat fit for the truly fearless who expertly challenge those who believe in the ever dreaded notion that…“Rock Is Dead”. Supernova is an example of just how alive the genre is, how well its thriving and just how deep NT are willing to drive into the depths of the unknown to create what we heartily regard as a contemporary magnum opus.
Their unquestionable tenacity, brutalised veracity, alongside the capacity to engage with an audience that thrives on the diversification of the “tried and tested” ways of expression; all of this is not only fascinating as a genuine fan, but represents the paving slabs that are only ever laid for the most distinguished of trailblazers.
It is with experimentation and the determination to stand as a unapologetic figure in a landscape poised to tear you down, that under an incredible amount of pressure that the purest and most precious of diamonds can form. Therefore it would seem, that Supernova is one of the most precious of diamonds you will ever have the pleasure of experiencing for yourself.
