The new single and video from noise-wracked dance-punks Fashion Tips is a timeless ode to hating your mate’s dickhead boyfriend, one delivered via acidic sass and abrasive synths. We’re overjoyed to premiere it.
Lifted from the band’s freshly released LP debut I Wish You Every Success – out now via Human Worth – ‘Steve Lamacq’ stands as the brilliant and unsantised embodiment of Fashion Tips. The noise-rock equivalent of a bootleg party popper go off into your eyes point blank, the track is an overwhelming bombardment of entangled streamers in the key of electroclash, noise rock, sasscore, queercore and riot grrl. There’s no subtleness to be had here, especially with the track featuring what can only be described as pummelling bass grooves smashing overworked and smoking synths into oblivion to the sound of hysterical vocals, but such is to be expected. This is the sound of a band who take the sasscore flag and run with it into the grotty underground, a place inhabited by bands such as Gender Warfare, Model/Actriz, Irked and Melt Banana. It’s brilliant, lurid, uncompromising and truly gets across how much of a wanker your boyfriend is.
‘“Steve Lamacq’ is a strange little song about hating your mate’s boyfriend”, states vocalist and programmer Esmé Newman. “Fiona (Samples, Guitars, Vocals) filmed the video in and around our practice space, and the house that three of us share, in Gateshead, North East England. The basic idea for the clip was to make it “zine-like”, handmade and scrappy but charming and intimate. The footage was then mangled into technicolour imperfection by our guitar player Jorden.”
I Wish You Every Success is out now via Human Worth, with 10% of all proceeds going towards North East Autism Society to help with their crucial work assisting those providing autism care for those in the North East region.
